Raw Magazine’s first issue was published on August 31, 1988 by writers and photographers who had previously worked on Kerrang! and Metal Hammer magazines. They had come together due to the collective feeling that Kerrang! was becoming too narrowly focused on heavy metal, and Metal Hammer wouldn't allow room to explore other areas of rock music. Raw (which was the acronym for “Rock Action Worldwide”) was published every two weeks. A new staff took over in 1990 and the magazine slowly declined. The last issue was published in 1996.
