Founded in 1984, Guitar Club continues to be the premiere guitarist magazine in Italy. All playing styles are included, as are articles and interviews with bassists. This issue features King’s X bassist Doug Pinnick and includes two photos of his custom Yamaha 12-string bass.

The interviewer asks about the 12: “On the record you used your famous 12-string Hamer bass…”

“Yes, but it's not the only bass I've played. In general, I alternate it with a four-string Yamaha Attitude… always left-handed, of course. Basically, my Hamer B-12L is the left-handed version of the B-12S. I had the inlays customized and put EMG active pickups. Standard string gauges: 20-45 for the octaves and 45-100 for the four fundamentals.”

“I have to say, though, that I'm still not that happy with my 12-string bass technique, even though I've been playing it for at least fifteen years. I often realize that I use it as if it were a normal four-string and therefore I am unable to exploit all its possibilities. Maybe I should think in another way, think of it as an instrument in its own right and not as a different type of bass. But it's not that easy.”
