100 Things Pearl Jam Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die

Author Greg Prato mentions the 12-string bass a couple of times: “So just how does King’s X fit into the Pearl Jam equation? The first sign of Pearl Jam’s admiration was including Pinnick’s name on the thank you list of Ten - quite possibly due to the fact that it was Pinnick’s bass sound on such King’s X tunes as ‘Out of the Silent Planet’ that inspired Ament to pick up a Hamer 12-string bass, which eventually led to the classic bass riff of PJ’s ‘Jeremy’...”

Also: “With Ament an admirer of the thunderous 12-string model bass that Hamer offered - which was also played by Cheap Trick’s Tom Petersson and King’s X’s Doug Pinnick - Ament took the plunge, and as a result we now have one of the best known bass guitar openings to a rock song: ‘Jeremy’.”
