12-String
Bassists
Featured in Bass Player Magazine
|
|
Tony Senatore is featured in the Soapbox column of the December, 2005
issue of Bass Player magazine. He is pictured holding his new
Rothstein Andromeda 12-string bass. Tony's first sentence reads, "The 12-string electric bass guitar - or the 12'ver, as the fanatics on www.12stringbass.net call it - has been around since about 1978." Thanks for the mention Tony, and yes, we ARE fanatics! After giving an overview of his musical career, Tony writes about how the 12-string bass inspired him to express himself in new and exciting ways. It helped him to find his own musical voice, rather than mimicking what countless others had done before him. Tony encourages bassists who have never played a 12-string bass to give it a fair trial. Well done, Tony! |

The December issue also features
Doug Pinnick in a five-page article. His custom Yamaha 12-string bass is
pictured in a sidebar. Doug discusses the songwriting process both with King's X and on his solo projects. Playing techniques like chording are covered. There is also an overview of his rig, which we have documented in our Rigs section. If you haven't done so already, be sure to pick up your copy of the December issue of Bass Player. Jack Bruce is on both the front and back covers. |

Monty Colvin Endorses
October Guitars
|
|
In
early May Monty Colvin took delivery of his first 12-string bass since selling
his Hamer B12S several years ago. His acquisition of the bass was a result of
his new endorsement deal with October Guitars arranged through
12stringbass.net. We are happy and excited to welcome Monty back to the fold of 12-string bass players and wish him and October Guitars all the best in their new artist / builder relationship! You can expect to hear Monty's new October / Hades 12-string bass on future CRUNCHY albums and at live CRUNCHY performances. Monty writes, "I recently got a call from my friend at 12stringbass.net. He was kind enough to put me in touch with the cool people at October Guitars and they hooked me up with a new 12-string... and it's amazing! It's a great sounding instrument and I immediately tuned it down to dropped-B and started laying tracks in my studio. I actually ran it through one of my POD amps and went with a cleaner tone so I could hear all the strings ringing out. I usually play pretty distorted, but this bass sounds huge and I didn't want to muddy it up." "It's also a beautiful looking bass. In fact, it's so pretty I haven't had the heart to cover the body with stickers yet! Anyway... check those basses out if ya can. They look and sound great!" |
"In other news, I'm still recording tracks for my next Crunchy CD. It's about 75% done and it's turned into a bit of a concept album. Tentatively titled 'LOSERVILLE', it's a darker sounding record than the first two Crunchy CD's. I'm still singing the vocals so it's still got the catchy, melodic hooks. But I've gone back to writing some of the metal riffs I used to write when I was in Galactic Cowboys. Why? It's fun... and I love playing that stuff live. Also, it just seems to fit my mood these days and music is always a great outlet. I'm not sure when the CD will be done."
"Thanks again to 12stringbass.net and
October Guitars. You guys rule!
Talk to ya soon,
Monty"

Rachel
Bolan's B12S Appears in ToneQuest Magazine

The current issue of ToneQuest Report features a very in-depth interview with Jol Dantzig of Hamer Guitars. Even though the 12-string bass is mentioned almost as a footnote, the photo they chose to print as an example caught our eye as being the custom Hamer B12S once owned by Skid Row's Rachel Bolan. This bass, pictured above, was recently offered for sale on eBay. Shortly after the history of this bass was reported on our Forum, the auction quickly and suspiciously ended. The instrument's current whereabouts are unknown.

Tom Petersson
Signature 12-String Bass
Available in January
from Waterstone
Waterstone Musical Instruments, LLC in collaboration with Cheap Trick bassist Tom Petersson, has announced production of the Tom Petersson Signature 12-String Bass Guitar.
The mahogany semi-hollow body and maple neck with rosewood fretboard are available in two finishes: black with chrome hardware or cherry with flame maple top and chrome hardware. The setup consists of four fundamental strings with octave pairs for each fundamental in addition to an F-hole. Each bass is signed and numbered by Tom Petersson.
Waterstone Musical Instruments was established in 2002 by long-time guitar collector Bob Singer in Nashville, Tennessee. Singer was interested in incorporating some of the classic stylings and features of German and American guitars that were produced from the 1950s to the present. His initial experiment with prototyping and design quickly burgeoned into a new business – Waterstone Musical Instruments. Waterstone guitars and basses offer outstanding quality with a nod to vintage stylings. Tom Petersson’s like-minded opinions regarding bass aesthetics and tone quality paved the way for this natural collaboration with Waterstone to emerge.
The Waterstone Tom Petersson Signature 12-String Bass is an instrument designed by the pioneer of this genre. “Waterstone is thrilled to be a part of this project,” states Singer, “Tom Petersson is a fantastic artist and a very astute and insightful guitar collector.”

Doug and his 12 go
on Clinic Tour

Earlier this spring Doug Pinnick and Kenny Arnoff did a series of clinics at various music stores across the country. The final stop of the tour was at Daddy's Junky Music in Manchester, New Hampshire to jam with none other than Tribe of Judah members Gary Cherone (Extreme / Van Halen) and Leo Mellace. The week prior to the clinic found the four of them rehearsing at Sanctum Sound Studios in Boston. The rehearsals were reported to include some Zep, some Beatles, and a little James Brown. As reported within the past few days in our Forum, Doug Pinnick's Yamaha 12-string bass is just fine. There had been rumors on several other websites that the headstock had been broken and other damage had occurred at a recent concert, but this is untrue. These photos were taken before the KX concert in Charlotte, NC on October 9th. Thanks to Doug for setting the record straight!

After a brief 10 year career the members
of Big Wreck have decided to go their separate ways. "Unfortunately
it is true, Big Wreck is no more" states 12-string bassist David
Henning. "It is kind of disappointing to me because the band still had
lots of potential, but that was the way it had to be."
The unusually talented band is probably best known for their hit "That Song" from their debut album "In Loving Memory Of...". In reality Big Wreck was a very broad musical force and fans of the band would say that it could not be defined by any one song.
All too often great bands erupt in anger
that destroys once tight friendships. Not true for Big Wreck. "I left on
amicable terms with everyone and wish them nothing but the best.
We had been through a lot together." When asked what David would be doing
next he said, "As for me, I have gone into a mode of intense study with a wicked bass player named Matt
Garrison in NYC. He plays with Herbie Hancock, John McGlaughlin, etc. He has been kicking my butt!"
What does the future hold for
David? "I eventually hope to get back out in the music world in the next
year. I am really enjoying this period of 'shedding'."
We at 12stringbass.net wish
David and the rest of the members of Big Wreck the very best.

"Big
thick harmonies... distorted bass... slammin' guitar riffs... and non-stop
melodic hooks!" That's how Monty Colvin describes the
soon-to-be-released second CRUNCHY
album. "I've been in the studio all week and it is sounding great man! I'm
having this guy, Jeff Scheetz, mix it at his studio. Yesterday we were working
on this song and he said, 'I love that part! It sounds like Dream Police!' I
thought of you!"

Doug Pinnick
to use
12-String Bass
On new PoundHound
CD
The next PoundHound CD will be the first to feature his 12-string bass, reports
Doug Pinnick in a recent email to 12stringbass.net. Doug states, "I played 12 on
two songs so far... just because you
suggested it!!" When quizzed about actually being influenced by
12stringbass.net Doug replied, "You did influence me... I wasn't going to use
it till you mentioned it. Besides... the publicity on your website would be good for PH!!!"
Doug is currently finishing up the as-yet untitled disc. We will be bringing you all the info on it as soon as he sends it to us. Thanks to Doug for his continuing support!
