12-String Bass
Featured Player
Terry Strudwick has been playing in bands for over 25 years and is just as
comfortable playing in a metal band as he is in a country band. A resident of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada,
Terry keeps busy
playing, teaching and recording. Over the years he has recorded and performed
with many artists from across Western Canada. Live TV, radio and theatre performances
are also activities Terry has had the pleasure of doing as a bassist / vocalist.
The 12-string bass has been a fascination for Terry ever since he first
heard Cheap Trick's "Live at Budokan" album. He finally got his first 12-string
bass - a Hamer CH-12 - in 2006 and immediately incorporated it into the groups
with whom he
worked. Terry writes, "Thanks to 12stringbass.net I became aware of the
Waterstone TP-12's and now I own three of them: Two TP-12/32's and my favorite
one, an ice-tea burst TP-12/34. Often two 12's can be seen on stage as I keep
one in drop-D tuning - 'Another Brick In The Wall' has never sounded bigger!"
This page is
dedicated to working 12-string bassists everywhere!

Depending on the gig, Terry plays a 12 anywhere from 50-100% of the show. His
main band is "Half A Quorum" from Kelowna which plays everything from Elvis to
Patsy Cline to Neil Young or even Ray Charles. Terry states, "It's a great way
to explore the 12-string possibilities!" This group is on the verge of releasing its first CD this fall.
Terry has started playing with blues band "Dogskin Suit" from Kelowna and has introduced 12-string bass into the sound. The 12-string has also found its way into the live shows of original artists Leah West and Sherri-Anne Nygard.

Other basses used are 4-string and 5-string Fender Jazz basses, a Yamaha Attitude and
a fretless Fender Precision bass.

For most live gigs, two amps are used. A Gallien-Krueger 1001rb with a 4x10
cabinet for straight bass sound and a Line6 amp for chorusing and distortion on
the top end. Terry: "Nice big, tight sound and yet it isn't over-whelming onstage...
soundmen and the other players seem to appreciate that. Eventually an 8x10
cabinet will be introduced to the rig - fellow band-mates beware!" For recording,
Terry is currently experimenting with different sounds and recording techniques.
Terry told us, "Mixing direct and amplified sounds is starting to yield some big
sounds. An album is in the works and hopefully will be completed soon."
